1. Background.

I have done two reports on a Harvard manager in Romania being detained for corruption. The initial report passed on a press release of the Responsible Investment at Harvard Coalition. The second provided a link to the very well written Bloomberg report on the matter.

They are posted at, respectively:

Sandra Korn of the Responsible Investment at Harvard Coalition comments as follows:

***********

The Bloomberg story is accurate -- Harvard's former managing director is accused to taking bribes in exchange for overpaying for land. As we stated in our press release, the Responsible Investment at Harvard Coalition is concerned that this represents another manifestation of the lack of accountability Harvard has over its directly-held companies. Irresponsible actions by corporate directors sometimes harm workers, sometimes neighbors, and, apparently, sometimes they harm the company's own revenues. Either way, our university needs to be a responsible owner of its directly-owned timber plantations. We've called for Harvard to establish a system of accountability and transparency to ensure that scandals like this don't happen again.

3. Editor’s Position.

As I said in the first report, Harvard’s tree chopping investments are highly compatible with the outrages going on on the Charles River for the benefit of Harvard and its buddies.
