Charles River: Logging preliminary photos - third group of photos.

Charles River: Logging preliminary photos - third group of photos.

1. Summary.
2. Third Photos from 10/22/15.
3. Past Reports in THIS series, and a communication showing everything to a bad city council.

1. Summary.

This is the most recent report on the imminent logging by the Department of Conservation and Recreation on Memorial Drive on the Charles River.

My blog will not handle all the photos at once.  So I am presenting them in sequence.  This follows on prior reports with the destruction plans and other photos.

The “approvals” received by the DCR for this outrage are non existent.  They simply asked for money without saying what they were doing.  The DCR has announced a second public meeting for the irresponsible, but far less destructive proposal at Magazine Beach.  That proceeds with the fraud of being a responsible entity.

Naturally, the massive destruction is kept as secret as possible.

As near as I can figure out, the lobbying effort in the legislature amounted to the falsely named Charles River “Conservancy” showing a petition for underpasses under three bridges further out on the Charles.  It appears that they lied that the petition for underpasses supported this massive destruction, without, of course, mentioning the destruction.

The falsely named Charles River “Conservancy” openly supported this destruction about ten years ago when fraud was not the in thing.  The destruction has not changed.  Fraud is now the open tool.

The past gross irresponsibility of the DCR’s predecessor resulted in serious punishment of its predecessor by the legislature, but the predecessor lives on in the DCR and the DCR now is grossly irresponsible.

2. Photos from 10/22/15, third grouping.

These photos start with the last photo of the last grouping.  You can see the trees which are not being destroyed behind the fence.

It proceeds through the strand of condemned and excellent cherry trees across from the Hyatt Regency Hotel.  The orange mark of death is on the side toward the street of EVERY cherry tree shown.

The closely cropped bordering vegetation shown is the norm on the Charles River.  The 16 foot high introduced wall of vegetation at Magazine Beach is unusual, but it has a purpose.  It is designed to and has been allowed to grow to starve the Charles River White Geese.  Fraud of omission is the in thing.

The wasteland situation is, in part, attributable to coordination between the DCR and the City of Cambridge.  Cambridge destroyed targeted trees in this area supposedly as part of a sewer project.

It is possible that unprotected trees may yet be protected.  I cannot wait until they are done protecting the few trees they are not destroying.  By then it will be too late.

Off in the distance at the end is the magnificent grove of 105 cherry trees at the Memorial Drive split.  Last I recall, 83 were slated for destruction.

1. Summary.

This is the most recent report on the imminent logging by the Department of Conservation and Recreation on Memorial Drive on the Charles River.

My blog will not handle all the photos at once.  So I am presenting them in sequence.  This report will start with the destruction plans for the area, which I could not fit in the original report, then resume the actual photos, to the extent that is possible.

Really, it is not possible to resume the photos.  I guess I will have to do two reports at a time to get in all the photos of this outrage.

2. Destruction plans.

Here are the plans for destruction in the area covered by the photos.  Much more destruction is included in the plans than is shown here.  A link to the total plans begins section 4, below.

The blackened circles are healthy trees condemned for destruction.

Not able to fit in in first report.

3. Photos from 10/22/15.

I am resuming from group 1 with photos, insofar as I can publish them, and will proceed again after ward.

As stated, this will have to resume with the third report of photos.  Two reports at a time, and I am overloading my blog.

Charles River: Logging preliminary photos - first group of photos

Charles River: Logging preliminary photos

1. Summary.

This is the most recent report on the imminent logging by the Department of Conservation and Recreation on Memorial Drive on the Charles River.

Actions have been done in total secret.  To rub in the irresponsibility, AFTER the beginning of the work, the DCR conducted a fake but public review of much less irresponsible plans at Magazine Beach.  This was sponsored by the local fake neighborhood association which has been fighting for this and many other outrages through company union tactics.

Money was voted in the legislature, Acts of 2014, chapter 286.  NO MENTION OF MASSIVE DESTRUCTION WAS PRESENTED.  In fact, the local legislator promised that no trees would be destroyed without “public” input.

It would appear, based on their announcement of funds going forward, that the falsely named Charles River “Conservancy” lobbied for this money based on the lie that their petition for underpasses under three bridges to the west included support for this outrage.

The nearest of the three bridges mentioned in the petition is two bridges west of the three bridge area (BU Bridge to Longfellow Bridge) affected by this outrage.

2. Destruction plans.

Here are the plans for destruction in the area covered by the photos.  Much more destruction is included in the plans than is shown here.  A link to the total plans begins section 4, below.

[NOTE:  I have exceeded my capability with the photos in section 3.  This section and further photos in section 3 will have to be placed in following reports.]

3. Photos from 10/22/15.

The photos begin a little bit west of the Destroyed Nesting Area in which the 34 year resident Charles River White Geese are confined without food.

The photos proceed, walking along the river, to Endicott Street which appears to be the CURRENT western extreme of the destruction site.  They then return to the point of origin, with much less photos, walking along the sidewalk on the far side of Memorial Drive.

The trees to the right at the beginning are the Wild Area which is separated from the Destroyed Nesting Area by the Grand Junction Railroad.  This area shows on the plans as ONE UNDESTROYED TREE AND NOTHING ELSE with a retaining wall apparently replacing the hundreds of trees in this woods.

Photos are taken in the midst of preparation.  It is possible that more protection and tree damning Orange marks will be placed.

The first, protected grove is separated from the Charles by a series of unprotected trees.  Clearly damning.

Proceeding, we come, on the left to a grove of unprotected trees.  Viewing this grove from the sidewalk, all are marked with the orange spot of the damned.

The next major grove is a grove of cherry trees.  My recollection is that the plans call for destruction of about 83 out of 105 trees.

The lighting is not good enough to see many of the marks of the damned.  It is safe to assume that this excellent grove of HEALTHY trees is going to be savaged.

After the cherry grove, note the creation of an unprotected area on the median.  I had been surprised by the apparent protection given to these trees when I photographed them previously.  That protection was clearly an error.

Charles River: Flash: DCR Going Ahead with Massive Destruction on Memorial Drive

1. Summary.
2. Destruction plans.
3. Photos from 10/22/15.
4. Past Reports in THIS series, and a communication showing everything to a bad city council.

1. Report.

This is a flash report, report 5 in a series.

I had a reliable report that construction has progressed to the Hyatt Regency Hotel, not that far from the Destroyed Nesting Area.  In fact, in better days, the Charles River White Geese used to visit them.

I walked Memorial Drive from the BU Bridge to the eastern end of the established construction zone.

Clearly, massive numbers of excellent trees are marked for and slated for destruction.

The western end of the construction zone now extends to at least the Memorial Drive bridge going over the traffic circle at the BU Bridge.  The eastern end now runs to Endicott Street.  That includes a few trees between Endicott Street and the first of the construction trailers.

On a visual analysis, based on my good knowledge of the situation, a very significant part of the impending destruction, if not all, corresponds to parts of the DCR’s outrageous tree destruction plan that was blessed in the 2014 State House vote.

I noticed a construction zone sign aimed at Memorial Drive on the side street which has the main entrance of the Hyatt Regency.

I have, once again, taken a lot of photographs.  I will report further once I have this very large amount of work fully processed.

Charles River / Mass. Pike Planning Constructive

1. Introduction.
2. Soldiers Field Road.
3. Grand Junction Commuter Rail.
4. Commuter Rail Access to / from Commonwealth Avenue.
5. Access to / from Cambridge Street / Western Avenue, Allston.
6. Alternate proposals.
a. Architect’s proposal.
b. Boston University type proposal.
7. Summary.

1. Introduction.

On Thursday evening, October 17, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation led its fairly regular monthly gathering of invited advisors.  The location was the North Brighton neighborhood of Boston.  The meeting concerning the rebuild of the Massachusetts Turnpike (I90) on the south side of the Charles River across from the severely reduced habitat of the Charles River White Geese..

The structure of the meeting came as a surprise since MassDOT had promised to present a final version of its proposal.  Instead they broke the meeting into four rotating demonstration groups working over large plans.  Two of the groups presented different parts of the MassDOT ideas.  The other two were presentations of the two non MassDOT concepts which were featured at the last meeting.  In contrast to prior presentations with one lecturer, each presentation was a group effort.

The MassDOT concept was a minimal arrangement to fulfill the various goals it is working on.  They have the West Station commuter rail, South Station overflow storage and the Mass. Pike turning as close as possible to the southern edge of the working area, along with roadway access.  The maps used included significant portions of the Cambridge side.  The comparison of the Mass. Pike working area to residential Cambridge drove home just how very large the area the are working with it.

Here is the most recent version of the plans I have.  It is several months old and thus lacks accuracy in details.

2. Soldiers Field Road.

There were changes of note in the relationship to Soldiers Field Road and with regard to public access to the Commuter Rail from the direction of Commonwealth Avenue.

Soldiers Field Road is being rearranged so that the rebuilt Mass. Pike will be above it for a portion.  There has, for some time been planning for access from the site to the east bound side of Soldiers Field Road (inbound).

The plans shown on Thursday presented, for the first time, a ramp from Soldiers Field Road west bound (outbound) to the site.  This, they explained, is being considered at the request of Harvard.  The addition of this ramp could greatly improve the westbound exit to the River Street Bridge because half or more of that traffic is going to the south, exactly the direction where the new ramp would lead.

One of the maps showed a second entrance from the site to the eastbound side.  I suggested that creating two added entrances would be a problem to Soldiers Field Road, and that the addition of an access road would resolve the problem.

3. Grand Junction Commuter Rail.

MassDOT has dramatically, but nicely, firmed up tentative opposition to use of the Grand Junction for Commuter Rail.  That usage would be destructive to the Cambridge side of the Charles and to its animals.  MassDOT made it very clear that their plans for Commuter Rail are solely to South Station, with no current plans to North Station via the Grand Junction.

A particular concept which has been raised has been to consider the use of DMU (Diesel Motor Unit?) vehicles being studied by the MBTA, the regional public transportation entity.  MassDOT stated that they are considering this use, but SOLELY to South Station.  The MIT types have been using DMU as a code word for Grand Junction commuter rail.  This was clearly rejected at the present time.

One MIT type was quite distressed that the plan did not include a study of commuter rail on the Grand Junction.  I informed the gentleman that MassDOT had studied the concept and determined it was of no value to anybody other than Kendall Square, which is dominated by MIT and related companies.

The gentleman responded to the effect that he considered a benefit to Kendall of value.

4. Commuter Rail Access to / from Commonwealth Avenue.

The proposed West Station is firming up as a structure the equivalent of four residential stories high.

It remains west of a series of low buildings which have been adjacent to the railroad yard.

Previous discussions spoke of access going through an opening in the middle of the buildings.  This presentation firmly spoke of a ramp to the west of the low buildings, to be constructed in the extreme of their parking lot, next to small houses.

5. Access to / from Cambridge Street / Western Avenue, Allston.

The proposal continues to have four streets in varying directions for vehicle / pedestrian access.  There was comment that at least one street directly feeds into a residential street on the other side of Cambridge Street which could become a short cut from North Harvard Street.

It looks like there is proposed two new streets connecting Cambridge Street and Western Avenue between the residential neighborhood and Soldiers Field Road.  One is Stadium Way, being proposed by Harvard for quite awhile.  There is another street in the plan between it and Soldiers Field Road.  Driving away from the meeting, I did see a roadway of some sort in that area off Western Avenue.

6. Alternate proposals.

a. Architect’s proposal.

They are still pushing construction to and above the Charles River.  They concede that, at this time, the proposal would remove rail access from a chemical company in the area.

b. Boston University type proposal.

This is the proposal which would build a bike highway over the Grand Junction railroad bridge and connect to the BU Boathouse by destroying the Wild Area.

The speaker did not want to talk about this concept.  It had featured very prominently in the presentation made to the entire group at the last meeting.

Close study of his map showed the bike highway stopping short of the Charles River and apparently ramping down to the existing bicycle highway following the Charles River on the south side.

7. Summary.

MassDOT appears to be progressing in a responsible manner.  I hope the active and destructive lobby continues to be stood up to.

During the meeting, I did not mention my proposal for management of the created parklands.  It is in writing and communicates very clearly.  It is posted at http://charlesriverwhitegeeseblog.blogspot.com/2015/10/charles-r-to-massdot-bar-dcr-from-mass.html.

I think that the legislature would be quite interested in having a say with regard to any increase in powers granted to the former Metropolitan District Commission, now Department of Conservation and Recreation, as I have analyzed in great detail.

I should think, at minimum, that a lot of those details would be confirmed by the Cambridge Conservation Commission and by the manager of MassDOT’s BU Bridge project.

MassDOT’s manager of the BU Bridge project has not been mentioned before.  He was quite familiar with the situation in the Destroyed Nesting Area of the Charles River White Geese.  I should think he would be as shocked about the outrage inflicted there by the DCR / friends as would any decent human being.  He certainly made a good impression when Friends of the White Geese gave him a tour of the area.

And accessing the two key articles in the Boston Globe / Boston Sunday Globe with those blatant lies from the DCR / MDC would be not that difficult.

Then again, it is highly likely there are legislators who remember the sales pitch given by the Charles River “Conservancy” and the part it played in the $20 million given to the DCR for destruction of hundreds of trees and animal habitat between the BU and Longfellow Bridges.

What should be done with an entity which has been punished so severely and so deservedly and still has not learned?

Part is my suggestion to MassDOT.  Their power should not be expanded by the Mass. Pike work.  The Mass. Pike open space being created and the associated highway in Boston between the BU and River Street Bridges should not belong to DCR / MDC.

Similarly, the area in which DCR / MDC has been so vicious and is increasingly so vicious should be taken from the DCR / MDC for the public good.  DCR / MDC should lose the Cambridge side of the Charles River from the Longfellow Bridge to the River Street Bridge.

You can only get so low.

RE: Your meeting, September 30, 2015, 6:30 pm, 806 Mass. Ave. Cambridge, MA
Proposing further destruction on the Charles River.

Gentlemen / Ladies:

1. Introduction.
2. Misdirection.
3. Starvation Wall.
4. Destruction of Little Guys Parking Lot.
5. Continued and expanded use of poisons.
6. Destruction of Playing Fields.
7. Commercialization.
8. Summary.

1. Introduction.

I am writing individually and as Chair of Friends of the White Geese, a Massachusetts Non Profit recognized by the Attorney General since 2002.  Our purpose is to stand up to you and to your accomplices in your attacks on the Charles River and its animals.

This follows on the referenced meeting and on 16 years of outrageous destruction, bad faith, flat out lying, and heartless animal abuse by the DCR and its predecessor on the Charles River.

Please note that, as part of my repeated objections to the nonstop outrages coming out of your department, I have suggested to MassDOT that MassDOT seek legislative approval to bar the DCR from open space created out of the Mass. Pike rearrangements near the Charles River and to bar you from Soldiers Field Road.  Actually, I think a proper legislative response to your record and to your plans would be to strip you of responsibility, as well, for the Cambridge side of the Charles River from the Longfellow Bridge to the River Street bridge.

It would be impractical to physically attach the letter to Mass DOT.  It occupies a large computer file because of all the graphics included.  A scanned copy of the letter has been posted in its entirety on the Charles River White Geese Blog at http://charlesriverwhitegeeseblog.blogspot.com/2015/10/charles-r-to-massdot-bar-dcr-from-mass.html.

Rather than repeat the great detail in my MassDOT letter, I incorporate it by reference.  Please read it in order to read my total communication, and feel free to download it in its entirety.

The letter, in part, is based on the legislature’s actions in granting MassDOT the Charles River bridges and the legislature’s folding other responsibilities on the Charles River into DCR.  This is combined with your continued outrages on the Charles River in spite of the legislative sanctions.

2. Misdirection.

I severely object to your selective “input” on the latest outrages by seeking “input” at Magazine Beach while keeping your many other outrages as secret as possible.

The Magazine Beach package is irresponsible and is based on nearly two decades of irresponsibility.  The other items you are ramming through in secret are far more irresponsible.  But you are lying of supposed concern for public interest by picking out the least bad of your outrages.  Once again, please see the MassDOT letter.

3. Starvation Wall.

The Starvation Wall between the Magazine Beach playing fields and the Charles River is an excellent example of your depravity.

You promised a “lawn to the river” in your sanctified Charles River Master Plan.  Instead you are implementing the Charles River Master Plan provision you keep as secret as possible, the provision to kill off or drive away all resident animals you can get away with.

For most of the last 34 years, the Charles River White Geese have lived at, fed at and have been beloved at the Magazine Beach playing fields.  They are a tourist attraction and a scientific miracle, but your sickness has the determination to join the rest of our destructive world in killing off as many animals as it is in your power to destroy.

So you have walled off them from the Charles River, and, in the process, have converted the playing field from a riverside treasure to an entity which is indistinguishable from so many other facilities away from the gem of the Charles River.

In your meeting, you admitted that you have driven away users from the river with this bizarre barrier.  People come to the Charles River to be part of the Charles River, not to experience a sickly wall of introduced vegetation with no comparable outrage elsewhere on the river.

So you promise to trim it.

Standard game.  You build this outrage in secret, in direct violation of your promises.  It is blatantly irresponsible and a major failure.

So you are going to trim it.

Behave in a responsible manner.  Behave as if you are fit to manage the Charles River, as opposed to heartless animal abusers who set a higher priority on heartless animal abuse than you do on managing the Charles River.

This INTRODUCED outrage should be fully chopped down and replaced with the lawn promised in your lies in the Charles River Master Plan.

And to fit the situation on the rest of the Charles River Basin.

4. Destruction of Little Guys Parking Lot.

Another example of an irresponsible proposal which had no support.  It now seems to have one newly visible supporter.

You demand the destruction of this parking lot west of the playing fields, at the foot of Magazine Street.  This is needed for the poor folk who use the area to picnic, and it is a beautiful little thing.  You have as much contempt for the little guys who need this parking lot  as you do for the animals you are heartlessly abusing.

The latest destruction proposal translates as “Golly Gee, won’t you at least let me destroy at least a little bit!!!”

The reality of this outrage is complicit with your outrageous plan to destroy hundreds of trees between the BU and Longfellow Bridges, also kept as secret as possible, but rammed through the legislature with the apparent help of lying by the Charles River “Conservancy.” (MassDOT letter)

You give whatever excuse the latest listener will buy, but you do not mention the real reason.  You are straightening out Memorial Drive to handle an off ramp from the Mass. Pike to Cambridge as outlined in the MBTA report of, probably, 2003, proving an off ramp feasible on the Grand Junction railroad bridge.

You are destroying the parking lot, as well, to speed up Memorial Drive to handle the off ramp traffic.

Nothing complicated about this outrage, irresponsible, of course, but you are fighting and fighting and fighting and lying that you are a responsible entity.

5. Continued and expanded use of poisons.

One excellent example of your lack of responsibility is the annual influx of algae destroying the Charles River as it affects the Charles River each time.  This comes from your use of your beloved poisons at Ebersol Field next to the Massachusetts General Hospital.

One year, you were not happy with the results of your beloved poisons.  So you dumped poisons at Ebersol Field marked “Do not use near water.”  The next day, the Charles River was dead with algae infestation from Boston Harbor to the Mass. Ave. Bridge.  And it comes back every year.

Whenever I talk to people about your love for dumping poisons on the banks of the Charles River, they are incredulous.  They cannot conceive that a state agency could be so irresponsible.

But you keep doing it and you are fighting to expand its use at Magazine Beach, keeping reality as secret as possible.  But using the code words, or simply refusing to respond to direct questions.

First of all, you are digging up the playing fields and replacing your beloved, introduced, poison drinking grass with new poison drinking grass.  The existing stuff is not doing the job.

The native grass you destroyed lasted the better part of a century.  But you destroyed it, and you are too irresponsible to seed it back in where it belongs after your sickly poison drinking stuff has failed.

Instead of responsible behavior, you are “improving” (code word) the hill to west of the playing field by ONCE AGAIN destroying healthy, well functioning native grass that does not require poisons.  You are replacing the responsible grass with yet more sickly introduced stuff which cannot live without poisons.

You are doing the same thing behind the swimming pool.  But you will not justify it BECAUSE YOU CANNOT JUSTIFY IT.  You will keep this outrage as secret as you can get away with.

You have excellent, NATIVE, grass at Magazine Beach which you are determined to SECRETLY destroy.  Instead of destroying it, you should seed back the responsible grass where you previously destroyed it.

And seed the responsible grass in the outrage that you have created out of the DESTROYED NESTING AREA of the Charles River White Geese to the east of the BU Bridge, WHERE YOU HAVE CONFINED THE CHARLES RIVER WHITE GEESE WITHOUT FOOD.  And note a lot more detail in the referenced MassDOT letter.

6. Destruction of Playing Fields.

One of the lies in the outrages of the 2000s was that of “improvement” (code word, again) of the playing fields.

Normal human beings would not consider destruction of playing fields an improvement.

But you did destroy playing fields, in order to drain off the poisons you are dumping on the banks of the Charles River which should not and need not be dumped on the banks of the Charles River.

The responsible grass you destroyed to introduce sickly stuff drinking poisons survived the better part of a century.

But you love your poisons.  So you destroyed playing fields to drain off poisons you should not and NEED NOT be using.  You destroyed responsible, healthy, native grasses, and you want to expand your outrage.

Bring back the responsible, native grass, and discuss whether the expensive, fancy drainage for your poisons should be returned to playing fields.

7. Commercialization.

NO, NO, NO.

Another part of your lack of fitness for your job, combined with the irresponsibility of your fellow traveler in the City of Cambridge, and its fake groups.  The City of Cambridge loves retail.

8. Summary.

Please reverse yourself.

Turn yourself into a department which is fit to manage the Charles River, its land, its waters, and its animals.  Not a department keeping its outrageous behavior as secret as possible while telling people to look at everything else, directly or through fake groups.

The legislature severely punished the Metropolitan District Commission by taking away its bridges and folding the rest into the DCR.

The rump management of the detested Metropolitan District Commission has survived in the DCR.  The rump management and the DCR clearly have learned nothing from the outrage of the legislature.  The corrupt tactics in the fake groups and in the DCR, particularly in your repeated lies of omission or commission (MassDOT letter) fit the outrageously irresponsible entity which the legislature was trying to kill.

Since you are determined in persisting in behavior the legislature tried to wipe out, it is my strongest hope to get rid of you as much as is possible.

Sincerely,

Charles R: To MassDOT - Bar DCR from Mass. Pike Rebuild Area

Charles R: To MassDOT - Bar DCR from Mass. Pike Rebuild Area

I have published segments of my September 17, 2015 letter to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation concerning its rebuild of the Massachusetts Turnpike (I90) on the Boston side of the Charles River across from the habitat of the Charles River White Geese.

I have been publishing segments because the electronic file is so massive as the result of the inclusion of so many graphics.  The file is quite simply too big to handle on its own.

To communicate concisely, I think MassDOT should request the legislature to bar the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation from operation of open space created as part of the Mass. Pike project.  I think they should also be removed from Soldiers Field Road.

This request is based on the strikingly bad and strikingly consistent record of the DCR on Charles River matters in the area.  I use the word “lie” quite a few times.

To make the package usable, I am enclosing scanned copies of each page.  I will start with the September 18, 2015 supplement.  I have reduced individual file size to minimize size problems.  Reproduction quality suffers.

Additionally, I have not been able to color scan the last five pages.  They are attached in black and white.

I am sorry, but it is necessary to double click the graphics to read the pages.

The original file is so large that one graphic could not fit although it did make the original.  I am adding that graphic to the end of this report.

Here is the missing graphic, from page 17.
