Charles River — Cambridge Common Outrage, PART I

It is very difficult to fully convey an environmental outrage which is probably yet to get worse.

I have today, April 12, 2015, photographed part 1 of what nine VILE Cambridge City Councilors (out of 9) have done to the Cambridge Common in the past few days.

I have no reason to believe this is the end of it.  The practice has been that trees not protected by slats are condemned by the vile nine.  I see one tree with slats in the process of being removed.  I see a lot without protections.

It is possible that all this outrage is done, for now and in this spot.

But the only thing to be certain about when it comes to the environmental destruction of the Cambridge City Council and its accomplices, is that it is highly stupid to say “They would never stoop so low.”

They keep getting lower, and lower and lower.  They have much worse plans coming either directly or through friends that they want to claim are none of their responsibility.

And the Cambridge, MA political organization has the flat out gall to yell at Olympics 2024 organizers and call the Olympics organizers environmentally dangerous.

I will start with before and after pictures of the site I have been using as the embodiment of the outrage pending on the Cambridge Common.

I will follow up with some before pictures.

After that, I will post EVERY after picture I just took.

A lot of the orange cones denote a destroyed tree.

Remember, whenever you see a Cambridge pol who tells you that that Cambridge pol or his / her organization, or his/her City Council is an “environmentalist”, laugh in his / her face, and call him / her a liar.

If they are a Cambridge pol, either they are one of the vile nine, or they are part of the vile organization which keeps the vile nine and their vile city government in office.

I have received a weekly email blurb from Cambridge, MA, USA, City Councilor Nadeem Mazen.

When he was elected, I thought he could possibly be one voice of decency in an otherwise environmentally vile City Council.  This impression was supported by the apparent interest of known vile members in not wanting to know about him.   Oh boy, has he corrected my impression.

Buried as the ninth item in his weekly report, Councilor Nadeem Mazen brags of the outrage on the Cambridge Common.

As near as I can figure out, he claims to be destroying 21 excellent trees to “facilitate the improvement work.”  He uses the word “remove.”  These vile people love euphemisms.

It would appear that the 21 excellent trees are in the way of his beautiful paths.

Normal people think that paths are created by excellent trees.  In his apparently claimed “opinion” these 21 excellent trees and the magnificent grove they create are in the way of his beautiful paths.

That is rather clearly a rewording of the claim that these 21 excellent trees and the excellent entrance they create are blocking the monument.

The repeated use of this “21" number among the Guilty has its own stench.  The plan clearly calls for destruction of fine, healthy trees away from the entrance grove.  The only open question is just how massive the destruction will be.  There are a lot, a lot of trees not protected by slats which do not fall into that “21" number.  Lies of omission are normal in the City of Cambridge when destroying the environment.

And the number of saplings being bragged about sounds more compatible with all those other not protected trees.

All of this, in turn, translates into a project which exists as nothing but a lovely way to put money in the pockets of the contractors.  Pay the contractors to destroy.  Pay contractors to put in saplings as “replacements” which, in turn, would be destroyed by the same contractors or their brethren as is convenient in the future.  The contractors love it.

To Hell with people who object to destruction of our world, but keep up the non stop lie of environmentalism.

In this sick world of Cambridge, MA, USA, excellent, healthy trees are in the way of saplings to brag about planting.

Mature, excellent trees and the magnificent beauty of the grove they create have no value to these people.  The cumulative destruction of our world is irrelevant.  These pols can’t brag about not destroying excellent trees.  They can brag about planting saplings to replace trees they should not be destroying in the first place, and, of course, neglect to mention the total, irresponsible waste.

The voters are not told of the total, vile waste.

Councilor Mazen is one of the new members whom I previously referred to as Guilty because they got and ignored my detailed letter to the Cambridge City Council with photographs of the pending outrage.

This is no longer a matter of failure to perform when aware of an outrage.  This is a matter of bragging of an outrage.

A very common situation with a Cambridge pol.  He cannot possibly be as stupid as his “explanation” seems to imply.

1. Caveat.

I realize that going into positive things is a bit incongruous given the vile behavior of the Cambridge City Council pending on the Cambridge Common.  However, you should realize that friends of the Cambridge City Council are running around calling the Olympics organizers environmentally destructive.

Some technical details are presented at the end along with a correction to my earlier comments concerning the existing Green Line B.


2. More Details on Boston University West.

I was fortunate enough on Tuesday to run past a Boston University map showing the BU West area.  It very much helps to understand details of the Green Line A proposal in that area.  More details on the proposal are posted at http://charlesriverwhitegeeseblog.blogspot.com/2015/04/charles-river-new-green-line-ideal-for.html.  At least one report will follow going into detail concerning the Harvard end, including a possible change.

3. Analysis.

The new photo shows the Destroyed Nesting Area of the Charles River White Geese at the top right of the photo, to the right of the BU Bridge.  To its right is a numbered building.  This is Boston University’s Cambridge Boathouse.  To the immediate left of the Boathouse is the cove which the Boathouse creates and which keeps water free in very frigid temperatures.  This is where the Charles River White Geese spent much of the very cold winter.

On general principles, here is a photo of the Charles River White Geese swimming in the Charles between the Destroyed Nesting Area and the rail bridge, latter not shown by BU.  The BU Bridge is to the left of the area in this photo.

On the Boston end of the BU Bridge is a street marked “West Campus”.  This is known to many people as Commonwealth Avenue.  The map shows a divider which is Green Line B.

The Mass. Pike (I90) goes under Commonwealth Avenue just west (left) of the BU Bridge.  The switch goes above the Mass. Pike with Green Line A running over the side of Commonwealth Avenue, proceeding between the Mass. Pike and the BU Buildings, marked in grey on the map.

Here is a photo of the area between the building marked 11 on the map, a new BU dorm, and the Commuter Rail / Mass Pike.  I have suggested that a station be built on air rights above the road, connecting to a second floor plaza in the residential complex.  (Station 1)

This is the side street which could be used as access to the two athletic buildings on Commonwealth Avenue, at least one of which is proposed for Olympics use.  The above photo is taken from an area behind the camera taking the side street photo.

The grey area gets lighter grey after the next side street.  The lighter grey is Harvard’s future Medical School, etc., now the Mass. Pike exit to Cambridge / Allston, and a now deserted freight yard which is used in part for rail operations supporting North Station in Boston and other locations in that area.

At the far left of the map are three buildings.

This is what they look like from Harvard’s holdings.  The Mass. Pike plans call for pedestrian connection to public transportation between these buildings.  That walkway is ideal to connect Station B to more BU holdings proposed for Olympics use.

Olympic use is proposed for the two fields below the marked buildings, for the oval Nickerson Field, and for the athletic building next to Nickerson Field.

The connections from Station 1 and Station 2 are excellent.


4. Additional technical comments.

a. Correction to prior report.  The Magazine Beach playing fields as part of this.

In my last report, I mentioned the existing Green Line Station to the right of the map and proposed that it be moved closer to the BU Bridge, immediately to the left of the map.  I incorrectly referred to it as the BU West Station.  It is the BU Central Station.

The Magazine Beach playing fields, slated for removal of at least some of Cambridge’s outrage there as part of the Olympics proposal, is at the top middle.  It would be a simple, pleasant walk from the relocated BU Central.

b. Harvard Station End.  Additional Station for JFK Park?

Additionally, I did not do a detailed analysis of the Green Line A proposal at the Harvard end.

I got an excellent question on the crossing of the Charles River which raised ideas to me and forced me to do a lot more thinking of the area.  Clearly this part of Green Line A would be the most expensive, foot by foot.  It is also crucial to give ready connection to the high speed Red Line and to the rest of Boston.

I will go into my much more detailed and more thought out ideas for this portion in a later report.

Of interest: one possibility, perhaps the preferred, would provide for a sixth station under JFK Street in Cambridge near the Anderson Bridge providing access to that riverfront and to JFK Park.

Of crucial value would be for somebody to aim me at a usable map of the Harvard Business School / Stadium / Harvard Square area.  Otherwise the communication will have less value.
